His Holiness Swami Chinmayananda Saraswati is one of the most popular sage of the 20th Century. Swamiji is best known for his contribution in spreading the message of Bhagavad Gita and Upanishads to the general public. His declared mission is to convert Hindus to be better informed about their own religion. He had conducted 576 jnana yajnas at various places in India and abroad. He has authored or co-authored more than 250 books and written commentaries on various scriptural texts. After a long period of spiritual work Swamiji had his samadhi in August 1993.

Chinmaya mission, the organization he had made to spread the message of Vedanta has got more than 300 centers and over 500 monks to continue the work Swamiji had initiated. He did not established any particular sect in Hinduism, but had the wealth of Millions of followers who are indebted to him for the wisdom they got from him or his disciples.

Biography:

Swami Chinmayanda was born in an aristocratic family in Kochi, Kerala on May 8, 1916 to Vadakke Kuruppathu Kutta Menon and Parukutty Amma. Balakrishnan Menon was his name in purvashrama. His father was a judge and a close relative of royal family of Kochi. His young age was uneventful except that he lost his mother at young age and was under care of aunts. Balakrishna menon had a good education in Earnakulam and Trissur and left Kerala for post graduation in Lucknow and there he engaged in political struggle against the British who were ruling the country then. He was put in jail for few years and had very bad experience from British police and escaped death due to an unattended disease by luck. He was then attracted to journalism and wrote extensively on the causes of common men on street.

Once he went to Himalaya, to expose the sages there, who he thought are the laziest people one the whole world. In Rishikesh he met Swami Sivannda, a doctor by profession before renouncing the life for sanyasa. Swami Sivananda gave the young journalist to have an opportunity to watch the daily routine of the Himalayan Monks. The reality of age old tradition living in the sadus of Himalaya changed Balakrishanan and he was ashamed of what he believed and wrote on the newspaper. On the Mahasivaratri day February 25th, 1949, at the age of 31Balakrishnan was initiated into sannyasa. Swami Sivananda gave him the name "Chinmayananda Saraswati," Chinmayananda meaning "filled with the bliss of pure Consciousness".

He later went to Uttarkashi to study under Swami Tapovan Maharaj. There he spend his next seven years in study of Vedic literature and practiced Dhyana. He moved with his master Swami Tapovanam in Utterkasi, Gangotri according to the changes in climate. Brimming with Vedantic knowledge, with a heart overflowing with love for his countrymen, Swami Chinmayananda decided to execute a plan to spread the message of Vedanta to the masses. His first public contact program, which he called as Jnana Yajna was conducted in Pune. It was a small gathering in the beginning but the increased with every passing day and by the end of the Yajna the strength was of several thousand.

Chinmaya mission trust was subsequently formed in different cities to carry forward the spiritual and social activities. Swami Chimayananda fast became very popular all over the world and among the Hindu organizations. In 1963 he was the major force in establishing Viswa Hindu Parishad. He gave extensive lecture in world renowned Universities, and debated at interfaith seminars. On 2 December 1992, Chinmayananda gave an address in the United Nations titled "Planet in Crisis”. In 1993, he was selected as "President of Hindu Religion" for the Centennial Conference of the Parliament of the World's Religions in Chicago, where Swami Vivekananda had given his address one hundred years previously. but he left his mortal body two months before the function.
